Boston Teacher Residency
Grant Size: $4,242,000 (1st grant $2.38m; 2nd grant $1.75m; 3rd grant $115k)
Grantee Since: 2002
Grant Objective: Found organization, scale organization, capacity building, evaluation.
Created to stop the revolving door of new, untrained teachers into and out of urban classrooms, BTR employs a medical residency model to prepare teachers to enter the classroom ready to teach, develop as effective teachers, and continue teaching in high-need schools. Since research shows that teacher experience is highly correlated to student achievement, one of BTR’s primary outcome objectives is teacher retention. Since its inception in 2002, 86% of all BTR graduates still teach in the Boston Public Schools. In comparison, in urban districts nationally less than 50% of new teachers persist past the third year.
